In 1971, WinnCompanies undertook the development of a property in Salem, Massachusetts and created 250-units of quality affordable housing. During the early years, the Winn team produced thousands of units of affordable housing throughout New England.

By 1980, the company's philosophy had earned it a position of trust and respect among regional real estate professionals, lenders, and community leaders in Greater Boston and beyond. That reputation was enhanced with the development of the Bostonian Hotel in 1982-a solid example of the kind of vision that propelled the company into a series of successful ventures along the east coast. From the urban centers of the Deep South to the mid-Atlantic region, WinnCompanies expanded its portfolio of properties, all the while becoming known as an organization of integrity, sensitivity, and style.

In addition to high-profile commercial development, the company maintained its commitment to creating and managing quality housing. In 2000 WinnCompanies earned national accolades for its work in turning around a severely troubled community-Mission Main apartments in Boston. By taking a holistic view of the community's needs, WinnCompanies helped transform a gang- and drug-ridden housing project into an award-winning housing community. Utilizing resources in excess of $100 million, Mission Main is an example of how the public and private sector can combine to create an innovative environment with lasting positive impact on any neighborhood.

Today, WinnCompanies are involved in numerous developments across the country. Whether operating as WinnDevelopment or providing services to development clients the organization is on the cutting edge. Waterfront development in downtown Boston, renovations and new construction of thousands of units throughout the Northeast and housing our nation’s military families at installations such as Fort Hood, Texas, are a few of the many challenges the Winn team face.

Throughout the years, WinnCompanies has pursued significant civic and philanthropic interests including, service to the Anti-Defamation League, the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Facing History and Ourselves, St. Mary's Women and Children's Center and generous support of many community interests such as the Boys and Girls Club, Habitat for Humanity, Caritas Communities, National Night Out and United Way.
